SEDONA

northwestern Arizona

Sedona enjoys a world-wide reputation for its marvelous red-rock formations, which Martha has photographed many times. The examples shown here are some of her personal favorites.

SUNSET CRATER NATIONAL MONUMENT

northwestern Arizona, near Flagstaff

Martha made these images in 2019. Unfortunately, in 2022 a wildfire burned 100% of the monument. So now, all the vegetation you see here is gone, and Martha’s heart is broken.

TUCSON MOUNTAIN PARK

southern Arizona, owned by Pima County

This county-owned park is one of Martha’s favorite places, not just to photograph the landscape, plants, birds, and critters, but also to camp. It abuts the western portion of Saguaro National Park, so together the two parks protect a magnificent swath of this gorgeous land.

VERMILLION CLIFFS NATIONAL MONUMENT

northern Arizona, north of the Grand Canyon, near Utah

The colors you see when you visit this long, stunning rock wall and its surrounding formations vary greatly depending on the time of day and weather conditions. the monument is easy to see along U.S. Highway 89A between Jacob Lake and Marble Canyon

To make these first two photos, Martha rolled out of her camper before dawn and was set up to shoot when the sun peeked over nearby formations. She made the lower three soon after.

In addition to what you see here, this monument also protects several other remarkable sites: Paria Plateau, Coyote Buttes, and Paria Canyon.

WATSON LAKE

northwestern Arizona, near Prescott (pronounced “presskit”)

Watson Lake, with its intriguing rocky formations, is locally known as the “Granite Dells.” As you can see by the distinct water line, the water level was already way down when Martha made these photos in 2010. Given the prolonged Southwestern drought, it’s probably even lower now.
