MARBLE CANYON

northern Arizona, on the Colorado River north of Grand Canyon

Photos barely do justice to this remarkable canyon, which was carved over thousands of years by the Colorado River. And it’s notable for much more than its depth and beauty. The steep walls you see on the right in this image go on to become the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The steep walls on the left become the North Rim.

MONUMENT VALLEY TRIBAL PARK

northeastern Arizona, on the Utah border

It’s hard to find words to describe this amazing place, which is located entirely on Navajo land. Photos barely begin to capture its amazing landscape. It’s a place one needs to visit in person to fully appreciate.

ORGAN PIPE CACTUS NATIONAL MONUMENT

southern Arizona, right on the Mexican border

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is a natural treasure and one of Martha’s all-time-top-favorite places. She has photographed it in many seasons over many years and never finds it boring.

For that reason, she is highly destressed at the destructive wall that a former president ordered to be cut straight through this priceless natural home of some of the rarest species of North American plants and animals… many of which traditionally migrated back and forth across the border but no longer can do that.

She’s also grateful that she had the opportunity to make these photos and others like them before that horrendeously invasive project began.

PAINTED DESERT

northeastern Arizona, part of Petrified Forest National Park

This is one of those rare places whose name tells its whole story. This famous “painted desert” is remarkable, and its position within the larger Petrified Forest National Park (see below) makes it a must-visit.

PETRIFIED FOREST NATIONAL PARK

northeastern Arizona

SABINO CANYON RECREATION AREA

southern Arizona, near Tucson

This remarkably scenic area has long been a favorite of hikers and nature lovers. It provides both healthful outdoor recreation and a rare chance to enjoy a high-quality riparian landscape in the desert.

SAGUARO NATIONAL PARK

southern Arizona, near Tucson

This amazing landscape is another of Martha’s favorite places on Earth. (So many of them are in Arizona!) Its proximity to Tucson makes it easy to access, and the fact that it has two separate areas means there’s good variety to the landscape.

Martha has made scores of photos of this remarkable landscape. Shown here are three of her favorites… from a single especially lovely — because it was unusually cloudy — day.
