CANYON DE CHELLY NATIONAL MONUMENT

northeastern Arizona

Located on Navajo tribal land, Canyon de Chelly (pronounced shay) actually consists of three canyons. The Native Americans who inhabited it for millennia before the first Spaniards arrived left fine cliff dwellings and rock art. (See Martha’s photos.)

THE COLORADO RIVER

northwestern Arizona

This grand waterway runs for 1,450 miles across seven states in the U.S. and two in Mexico. It’s a popular place to play and explore (photos above and below), and also a priceless natural treasure (photos below and elsewhere on this site).

The Colorado’s water level has fallen sharply in recent decades due to overuse and a prolonged drought brought on by climate change.

DEAD HORSE RANCH STATE PARK

northwest Arizona, near Cottonwood

This sweet spot on the Verde River has long been one of Martha’s favorite places to camp and, of course, take photographs. She’s “shot” more birds here than anything else, but the scenery is also photogenic.

The park’s curious name came about decades ago, when a family was looking for a ranch to buy. After visiting several, the parents asked their kids which one they liked best. The quick answer was, “the one with the dead horse!” Later, when those grown-up children donated the land to the state for a park, they insisted the name be kept. And it was.

CHIRACAHUA MOUNTAINS

southeastern Arizona

The National Park Service describes the pronunciation of Chiracahua: “cheer-i-cow-ah with a long e and short i vowel sounds.”

This spectacular “Sky Island” is known for three things:

  1. creating its own weather (3 photos below)
  2. its remarkable greenish cliffs and interesting rock formation, many protected in Chiracahua National Monument (6 photos farther down)
  3. one of the best birding hotspots in the US
